Mr. Bolos,

I know that we've moved on past the topic of Apple and their
factories, but I came across an article about Mike Daisey's monologue
talking about inaccuracies and him taking artistic liberties to beef
up the story. I thought it would be interesting to talk about how
basing information off of one source (which in this case was Mike
Daisey's accounts of the factories) can be bad and lead to bad
information.

Industrialization Essay Prompt -- crowdsourced

So often in a history class are we asked to provide answers, like a game of trivial pursuit. But I am reminded of this quote by Neil Postman and Charles Weingartner from Teaching as a Subversive Activity:

Once you have learned how to ask questions —- relevant and appropriate and substantial questions —- you have learned how to learn and no one can keep you from learning whatever you want or need to know.

Consider all we have encountered in this unit on Industrialization, including the following:

  • Romanticism
  • Development of the factory system
  • Effects of industrialization (including Modern Times)
  • Responses to industrialization (including Marx)
  • Contemporary labor practices (Apple and Foxconn)

Could you compose an essay prompt (argumentative) that would encompass all or part of the above content, allowing the writer to incorporate a variety of primary and secondary sources?

This may be a little dated in terms of what we are discussing in class, however I saw this article about Apple (and other electronic companies) in USA today and thought it was worth sharing with you. The author raises some interesting points, and it serves as a nice update on the ongoing struggle these electronic companies are facing.

Not to bore any more of you with my Fanboyism, but while I was browsing the Internet, I came across a video from my favorite online news show that had to do with Apple. Naturally I took a peek. This video was almost directly correlated to the Mike Daisey podcast. These people are finally trying to change the system for good.
